What they could let someone do.

What could happen

  • Forged requests

    Someone could get a signed in administrator to change something without knowing, such as adding a new admin or changing settings, just by visiting a page.

    How: The software does not check that a change came from its own pages, so another site can quietly send one through the administrator's browser.

  • Running code

    Someone could run their own code on the server and take the site over: add malware, send spam, steal data, or use it to attack others.

    How: Part of the software treats something it was sent as instructions to follow, or keeps an uploaded file somewhere it can be run.

  • Weak protection

    Something meant to be secret or checked, such as a connection, a token or a signature, could be read or faked.

    How: The software uses protection that is too weak, or skips a check it should make.
